The pupils in Eco Development have been extremely busy putting their ideas into action this term. One of their action targets this year is to help our school community reduce their reliance on single-use, throwaway items. To achieve this, the pupils have identified a range of these commodities most commonly found in the home. This month, three of our families helped by volunteering to test more sustainable alternatives to kitchen paper towels. Each family was given a different brand and was asked to use the product for a week, before completing a short survey put together by the pupils in Eco Group. Here are the results:

On Thursday 27 January, Eco Group presented their own assembly to explain how and why saving energy can help the planet.

“By recycling effectively, we can help reduce our energy consumption. The more we recycle, the fewer materials need to be made from scratch for new products, as companies can repurpose recycled materials in their manufacturing processes.”

“If we leave the tap running whilst cleaning our teeth, we waste 8 litres of water per day, per person. That’s 19 large soft drinks bottles each! Why not try using a cup of water to pour for rinsing instead?”
To spur us all on to recycle more, the ambassadors of Eco Group launched a competition to design a poster encouraging staff and pupils to use the newly-purchased recycling buckets for paper, cardboard and plastic. The winners and runners-up in each category will be published in our next newsletter, with the winning designs being displayed in classrooms and around the school.
