Children love asking questions…’Why does this happen?...How does that happen…?’ It is a frequent bombardment of questions that parents know all too well! Children have a continuous urge to understand the mechanics of the world around them and this insatiable appetite to understand why things are the way they are has led to the apt description of ‘little scientists'. Books are a fantastic way for children to have some of their burning questions answered in a simple, casual way. There are many new, important questions that children want answering and understanding since the start of COVID-19 and these are questions that as adults, we don’t always have the answer to, or the ability to explain it in ‘child talk’. Discussing and explaining to children about what is happening is vital to reduce their worries and fears, even if it may be beyond their understanding. Children have an uncanny ability to sometimes ‘get’ things when you least expect it. Books are also a great tool to support children with understanding the world in their language and to start or continue a conversation around such an uncertain topic.
The following books are a great tool to support children with trying to understand what is currently happening in the world. Picture books, even for older children, can aide that understanding. The phrase ‘pictures are worth a thousand words,’ really is true, especially in this current climate.
