Scholarships and Bursaries
Rationale: GEMS schools offer foundation scholarships and a wide range of academic and other scholarships in order to encourage and provide for pupils who are gifted and talented. GEMS schools are sympathetic to parents experiencing financial hardship and actively explore ways of giving support including bursaries.
Scholarships
Internal and external scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the Headteacher in liaison with GEMS Head Office.
All Scholarships must be reviewed annually. This process involves discussion with the pupil and assessment of their attainment and progress in the area in which the scholarship has been awarded. The pupil must continue to show the potential and commitment seen at the time of the award in order to retain it, as well as adhering the School Rules and Expectations at all times.
Scholarships may be offered in: sport, music, art, drama, public speaking and on academic grounds. An outstanding award may be considered for an exceptional talent or contribution in other areas e.g. a chess scholarship for a GB Junior Champion. The criteria and process for awards must be agreed by the senior management team of the school and communicated clearly to all applicants prior to the assessment taking place.
Bursaries
In liaison with the GEMS Head Office, the school may consider allowing parents to phase the payment of fees if they are experiencing short-term difficulties. This agreement should be for a set period with a review date. Alternative means of obtaining funding e.g. Charitable Trusts should be explored before considering offering an internal bursary. (Refer to Educational Grants Directory ISBN 1 903991 26 9).
Generally it is expected that such sources of funding would provide up to 25% of the fees. In liaison with GEMS, the Headteacher may award bursaries of up to 50% (usually combined with another source such as a Charitable Trust) taking into account financial hardship. Such awards are means tested and require the parent(s) to complete an application form and to produce written evidence of income.
All Scholarships and Bursaries are awarded at the Headmasters discretion with the prior authorisation from GEMS Head Office.
For all external applicants, the desire for a Scholarship or Bursary must be communicated at the Enquiry stage directly with the Registrar or clearly communicated on the application form.
The maximum award in both Scholarships and Bursaries candidates is 50%. A combination of both of these awards can be awarded to eligible families, but the total discount will not be more than 50% from the total tuition fee invoice.
It is under the strict agreement that the School Rules and Expectations are to be followed by pupils, parents and guardians, the Headmaster reserves the right to remove the award with immediate effect if these are not followed. The parent/guardian will then be liable for 100% of the tuition fees. For a copy of the Positive Behaviour Policy, School Rules, School Expectations and Terms and Conditions please contact
